Surgery C-arms are a combination of both an X-ray tube and image intensifier mounted on a C-shaped arm. They are mounted on wheels for portability, making it mobile and suited for imaging outside the Radiology Dept. They can be positioned at many angles around a patient. Some general clinical applications for mobile c-arms include: General Surgery, Orthopedics, Pain Management, Gastroenterology, Cardiac & Electrophysiology (EP), Vascular Surgery and Urology. There are slight variations separating the various models like whether or not the unit is equipped with mechanical brakes or electrical brakes. The Varic and Orbic have an x-ray tube with a stationary anode with a lower heat capacity, making them more suited for non-vascular work. However, the Avantic is dual focus, has a rotating anode and higher heat capacity making it ideal for vascular work. The Avantic also has other vascular features like Digital Cine Mode (DCM) and the option for a remote user interface. Other features available for the c-arms include subtraction, isocentricity, 3D imaging, navigation, etc.

Portable x-ray machines are conveniently designed to perform patient bedside imaging. There are both CR and Digital systems available. They are compact and lightweight and usually have battery assisted motor movements for ease of mobility. They include all adult applications and are also well suited for pediatrics and neonatal. They feature dual power sources and can be used on either battery or wall power for increased flexibility.
